The Spanish Language
The Spanish language has an interesting history, as it has been influenced by the different powers that ruled the Iberian peninsula. Originally Spanish or as it is known Castilean was first spoken in the small Kingdom of Castile in the northern region of the Iberian Peninsula. As the language expanded due to trading into more of the peninsula which was dominated by Islam, the Arabic influence on the language increased. One of the most obvious Arabic influences are the words starting with al. As the language spread different influences occurred. The Romans also had an impact on the original language and this is seen in modern Spanish which was developed from Vulgar Latin (the language of the common people).
As the Spanish empire grew, the Spanish language spread around the world. Although there are differences between the language spoken in Europe to that of the Spanish spoken in Mexico and Latin America if you learn European Spanish you will be understood. There are a few terms that could get you into trouble so it would pay to check those. Brazil is the only non Spanish speaking Latin American country. As a first language Spanish is said to be the 3rd most spoken language in the world. Many more speak it as a 2nd language. It is also acknowledged as an official language of USA.
Today if you live in USA there is an advantage in learning Spanish, it could be a way to get employment if your proposed employer has Spanish clients. Traveling to Spain as a holiday destination and as a place to own a 2nd property is also very popular. Enjoying your time in Spain is certainly enhanced if you can talk to the locals.
